Did You Know?

Did you know??
Although using avocados and bananas are all the buzz now to get soft and shiny hair, all it will get you is a messy kitchen and bathroom. These products are great to help your hair for one day, but the proteins in them are way too big for your hair to absorb. And unless you are going to use them each day (yikes!), then you should head to a beauty supply store and check out some Vegan products that use "hydrolyzed" proteins - proteins from avocados and bananas that actually are small enough to help your hair.

Apple Beat Smoothie

Photobucket

A few days ago there was an absurd sale on beats and it dawned on me that we haven't made anything on here with beets.  At that point, I scanned the options and purchased about a dozen of them, delicious and waiting to be cooked.  I have, however, come up with this recipe to get the most out of the beets without having to cook them or put them in a salad.  Still slightly tangy, this smoothie offers beautiful color to mix up your routine.

As you can tell, below I've included Leroi Jones's collection of essays titled "Black Music", a series of critiques on jazz and blues music.  Most people know Jones for his poetry (primarily during the-- wait for it-- beat movement) and that he was an ardent supporter of black power, and much of the latter comes through in this text (including a section regarding why white men cannot play authentic jazz).  This a great read an awesome near-microhistory of black music in America-- a great read for a cafe.

To the recipe:

1 beet, peeled
1 apple, cored
1 orange, peeled
1 tangerine, peeled
3 ice cubes
1 tbsp flax seed
1 cup of soy milk
1 celery stalk
